Melbourne's wholesale fruit and vegetable market was relocated from its former location in West Melbourne to a new site in Epping. The relocation turned the market into a modern, innovative and efficient fresh produce trading and distribution precinct.
With an annual turnover in excess of $1 billion, the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market is an important part of the State’s economic infrastructure.
Relocating the Melbourne Market enabled greater overall efficiencies.
Practical completion of the trading floor complex and transition to the new market occurred in 2015.
As it is fully developed over the next 10-20 years, the new market precinct will:
- incorporate the market’s core trading facility, warehousing and distribution centres
- provide users with significant improvements in logistics, access and occupational health and safety.
The State is facilitating the delivery of warehousing at the new market site in Epping to provide the necessary logistical capability to complement and interface with the trading floor complex.
More than 200 jobs will be created over the course of the warehousing construction.
The project is being delivered under a design and construct model managed by Major Projects Victoria for the Department of State Development, Business and Innovation. The warehouse build is a collaboration between private sector parties, Hansen Yuncken and Propertylink Australian Industrial Partnership.
