John Landy and Ron Clarke statue
The statue of John Landy and Ron Clarke has been temporarily removed from its location to the corner of Punt Road and Olympic Boulevard (Swan Street) to make way for the new Eastern Plaza building as part of the Melbourne Park Redevelopment project.
The statue entitled 'Sportsmanship' was created by Melbourne-based sculptor Mitch Mitchell. It celebrates the famous incident during the running of the 1500m final at 1956 Australian National Athletics Championships at Olympic Park. Ron Clarke had been leading the race but fell in the third lap after his heel was clipped by another runner. Landy stopped to help his fellow competitor up before going on to win the race in what has been hailed as one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history.
In consultation with the relevant stakeholders, including the sculptor, the new location of the sculpture will be relocated to Olympic Park. The statue is an important part of the precinct and will be restored to a place of prominence in the redeveloped precinct befitting its iconic status.
